Synopsis

Product Description
Charlottesville, Virginia-based recording artist Jan Smith crafts American roots music that observes personal experience through the details of the natural world. 29 Dances, her second compact disc release -- and Landslide Records debut presents an exuberant collection of originals from this distinctive new writer and singer. More than a slice of Americana, 29 Dances is influenced by Appalachian folk music, traditional country and bluegrass. Produced by Grammy-winning producer Bil VornDick (Alison Krauss, Ralph Stanley), the album was recorded in VornDick's Nashville studio in June of 2005. It features Smith's husband and longtime musical partner, Jeff Vogelgesang, on mandolin and harmony vocals. It also showcases the seasoned talents of Johnny Hiland on guitar; Pat McInerney (Nanci Griffith) on percussion; Byron House (Buddy Miller, Sam Bush, Nickel Creek) on bass; Randy Kohrs on resonator guitar; David Talbot (The Grascals) on banjo; Mark Fain (Ricky Skaggs) also on bass; Robert Bowlin (Bill Monroe) on fiddle; and Patty Mitchell on harmony vocals.

CD Reviews

Jan Smith raw, earthy sound is worth every minute
J. Dotts | Nashville, TN | 05/10/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

""Tin Heart", Jan Smith's first album rang with an intimacy and personality that surely attracted listeners. "29 Dances" looses none of that closeness even with the bigger sound produced by Nashville producer Bill VornDik. "Woman Your Guitar" is a saucy tale of regret that is sure to offend and entertain with it's witty lyrics and masterful guitar work.

Get this one."
A great release...

"Jan Smith put out an obscure disc a few years back with wonderful songwriting, but which often came up lacking in its overall feel (Tin Heart). 29 Dances, on the other hand, shows what she's capable of. I took this on a trip with me a couple of weeks ago, and listened to the whole disc straight through three times, then listened selectively to several tracks (James River, Gorham Mountain, Rum in My Morning Coffee, Willow Tree, and All around this Town) several additional times afterwards.

Any fans of Michelle Shocked, Alison Krause, or Gillian Welch will enjoy this... I'm already looking forward to her next effort."
