CD Reviews

Try This One and Feel Good!
Anthony Accordino | Massapequa Park, New York United States | 02/18/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"A soul session with James Brown and friends was originally aired over cable tv back in 1988 to critical acclaim. This cd is a fantastic overview of that live show from Detroit. The sound quality is great and Maceo Parker leads a very tight James Brown band. Brown opens the show with a supersonic rendition of "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" which is followed by the ballad "How Do You Stop". Wilson Pickett stops by and duets with Brown on "Cold Sweat". Robert Palmer belts out two duets with Brown singing the classic "I Feel Good" and the lovely ballad "Try Me". Billy Vera does a version of "Out Of Sight". Joe Cocker brings the crowd to it's feet with a stunning rendition of "When A Man Loves A Woman" which even caused Brown to get up and join the standing ovation. What might be called the raspiest duet of alltime Cocker and Brown join forces on "I'll Go Crazy". The Finale "Living In America" is the icing on the cake that makes this live cd one of the great party recordings that fans of R+B should own. Give this one a try if you enjoy well played good-time music."
