Consumate singer song writer

"It is a marvelous introduction to the great art of Jacques Brel (1929-1978), the poet, singer, and actor. Forty songs, some never completed or released, in fantastic sound, covering every facet of his moods, from his disgust of hypocrisy (e.g., Les bourgeois, Les bigotes), to nostalgia for his native Belgium (Le plat pays, Marieke), to love's travails (Ne me quitte pas, Madeleine), to accepting his own mortality (Le dernier repas). Some songs are humourous, others gut-wrenching, all sung with intense feeling. From this selection, you really get the essence of the man and his genius. A short life charged to the full.

My only quibble, and hence not a full five-star rating, is that this 2-CD compilation comes without the original (French) lyrics. Totally inexcusable when celebrating a word-smith like Brel, "parolier et compositeur".

The best compilation of Brel's art, I think, is 'Brel: Les 100 plus belles chansons', a 30th anniversary edition, issued by Universal Music France and Barclay in 2008, available from France. A five CD set in a metal box with a touching booklet, with words and photos, but again no texts of the songs. It is expensive (E25.07, ca. $35.00, and with shipping from Amazon.fr: a total of E35.97, ca. $50.36). You get all the great songs which made Brel great, inimitable, in brilliant sound.
