Synopsis

Album Description
Knud Vad was born in 1936 and was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Additional studies with Anton Heiller in 1960 and 1964. In 1964 Knud Vad was appointed organist at Soro Monastery Church, and in the following years he built up the musical life for which Soro is so well known today. In 1975 he started performing the organ works by Bach at the famous Marcussen organ in Soro Church and has repeated this since then with five-year intervals. In connection with the last performance in 2000 he has just now concluded the recording of Bach's organ works (including the Neumeister chorals) at the Soro organ (the first recording with the same organist at the same organ in Denmark).

CD Reviews

A Bach collection to lose yourself in
Millard Fullbore | New England | 02/13/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"First, two bits of bad news:

1. For the selections from this collection also recorded by Michael Murray for Telarc, I generally prefer Murray's playing.

2. In the multichannel versions of some (but not many) of the selections, the center channel overbears the left and right channels so much you almost think you're hearing a monaural recording.

As for number 1, that's merely my subjective preference, and in any case Murray only recorded a tiny fraction of this huge collection. As for number 2, you can mitigate the problem by disabling the center channel, and that only applies to a few of the selections.

The real news is that you're getting all of J.S. Bach's works for organ, played by a very fine performer on a fine instrument, with the great majority of the selections beautifully and realistically recorded, on 18 discs for only US $7.28 per disc. That would be a screaming bargain if these were just regular CDs, but they're hybrid multichannel SACDs as well.

If you love Bach's organ works, they're all here in a package you can't refuse.
