Accomplished performances of Martin's fine solo piano works
Nicholas A. Deutsch | New York, NY USA | 02/03/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Though the great Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890-1974) was a fine pianist, wrote 4 large-scale pieces for piano(s) & orchestra, & regularly used the instrument in other orchestral works, his output for solo piano was small. The major piece is the 8 Preludes (1947-8), written for Dinu Lipatti, which might be described as "J.S. Bach meets Claude Debussy" - fine, predominantly introspective miniatures, calling for both bravura technique & great subtlety. The other 2 longish works are Guitare (1934), a transcription of Martin's 4 Short Pieces for Guitar, & the Fantasy on Flamenco Rhythms (1973), written for Paul Badura-Skoda to play & Martin's daughter Teresa to dance; both are marvelous works, the latter in particular showing more of Martin's Romantic, quasi-improvisatory side. The short works are all characteristic of Martin's acute ear for harmony & rhythm, & on this disc there is a bonus in a previously unknown Danse Grave, an early version of the pas de deux for Cinderella & her Prince in the ballet Das Maerchen vom Aschenbroedel.
There have been several previous complete recordings of Martin's piano music, but this one by Daniel Spiegelberg appears to be the only one currently available. Fortunately, it's very good, with particularly strong rhythmic grounding - a must! Spiegelberg is especially effective when power & vigor are called for. I'm not fond of the sound on the disc, which is on the hard & dry side; whether this is due to performer, instrument or engineering I can't say. But if you want Martin's complete works for solo piano, you shouldn't hesitate. (If you are looking only for the 8 Preludes, there are other options, including Martin's own version, recorded when he was in his mid-70s, on Jecklin-Disco JD 563-2. Also, there is a wonderful 1994 live recording of the Fantasy by Badura-Skoda on Danacord DACOCD 429.)"
