CD Reviews

A MUST BUY!!!!!

"I've got a sundry collection of Ike & Tina CDs already... and the quality of these original discs is variable and typically very, very poor. I thought that I was lucky just to have my collection of $5-shelf obscure discs.

But at the CD store I stumbled on this release and heard samples of my faves from this 2-disc set. WOW! These songs have been meticulously cleaned up! No more hiss. No more low-fi! Woohoo!! It's Ike and Tina like you've never heard them before, literally! (Concentrating solely on the duo as musicians, they are HIGHLY underrated for their time together... the fact Ike was so horrible to Tina only makes their works that much more obscure and it's a darn right dirty shame.)

Even the earliest songs (e.g. the novel "Betcha Can't Kiss Me (Just one time)") sound phenomenal and almost sound as great as later-recorded songs on higher quality tape.

I wholly recommend this set to anyone who enjoys Tina's early era with Ike.

And I'd recommend it to everybody; the title "soul anthology" is much deserved and is exemplary of the R&B and rock genres."
Anthology = 3 mid-60s albums plus a few extras

"The Ike & Tina Turner Soul Anthology is probably not the best starting point for your Ike & Tina (and let's not forget the Rhythm Kings) collection. Rather than being a comprehensive anthology of their career together (or a greatest hits album like Every Hit Single: 1960-1974), "Anthology" gives you the contents of three Ike & Tina albums from the mid/late 1960s: So Fine, The Hunter and Outta Season, plus they also throw in two or three tracks from A Black Man's Soul, and the earlier hit River Deep - Mountain High.

If you were going out and buying individual albums these might not be your preferred choices. For that you might prefer one of their live albums - like What You Hear is What You Get, featuring their version of Proud Mary. But this collection is great if you're looking to get deeper into the work of the work of the group when they were still on the verge of that mega-hit of theirs, and before the rest of the story..."
Collects ***4***ALBUMS (and more) On Two CDs!

"The IKE & TINA TURNER: THE SOUL ANTHOLOGY two CD set collects four albums: So Fine, Cussin', Cryin' & Carryin' On, and Hunter/Outta Season on two CDs. Plus, it includes the Phil Spector recording of "River Deep-Mountain High" (from River Deep - Mountain High) and the Ike instrumental "Funky Mule" (from "Get It Together!").

All tracks have been remastered and sound great! The song "A Fool In Love" on this collection is a different take than the one offered on The Ike & Tina Turner Story [3CD] box set and, according to the liner notes, it might be from a 1968 recording session since Ike liked to recycle songs from time to time.

CD-one is my favorite with the tracks taken from albums "So Fine" and "Cussin', Cryin' & Carryin' On" and features more uptempo beats, whereas CD-two has more of the blues ballads from the album "Outta Season." But it still contains some funky tracks like "Bold Soul Sister" and others from "The Hunter."

Another reason I enjoy CD-one, slightly more, is because the Ikettes take the lead on some of the songs like "Poor Fool" and "So Blue Over You." Tina is featured prominently on CD-two, but both are enjoyably good. And CD-one contains a couple of Ike instrumentals namely "Thinking Black," which has a driving beat and sounds like the theme from SWAT. It's a jam!

My advice is to get this set rather than buying each CD, if you haven't already bought the individual releases.

EDIT:

I forgot to mention that THE SOUL ANTHOLOGY comes with CD cover with 5-panel gatefold with liner notes by Athan Maroulis, pictures--including pictures of the album covers and song information."
