Fritz Reiner made very few recordings for London--the most notable being the Verdi Requiem. This disc may seem like a collection of odds and ends, and in some ways it is. But all the performances are wonderful, and the disc really adds up to more than the sum of its parts. Besides, Reiner was probably the great Strauss conductor of his day, and this is the only opportunity we have to hear him in action with one of the greatest European Strauss orchestras. As for the Hungarian and Slavonic Dances, they are top-quality light music, and Reiner invests them with the same care and love that he would give a Beethoven symphony. "I have the previously released CD of this music by this conductor, on the London Weekend Classics label. This kind of music-making is simply magic. Fritz Reiner, who feels just at ease with the Hungarian Dances as he does with a Dvorak symphony, really puts his heart and mind in the music and gives us the best version of these works I have ever heard. Especially effective is the Hungarian Dance no. 6 in D major - if this music does not make you want to dance, then there is either something wrong with me or the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra."
