CD Reviews

Werner Gura at his best
Wellington Pavior | Australia | 05/07/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I have many, many lieder CDs and many of both this repertoire and many of Gura, and this would go down as one of my favorites.

Werner Gura is a tenor who should be better know then he is. His voice is creamy and full of color, and incredibly easy to listen to. He never goes over board in his interpretations which can be one of the downfalls of a singer such as Ian Bostridge. In this repertoire Gura shines. He is at his best (in my opinion) in both Verborgenhiet and Der Tambour.

Jan Schultsz is also very good and negotiates the sometime quite tricky piano part in these wonderful songs.

I have always been impartial to the lied of Hugo Wolf, but after tis CD (and the inspired release of the Eichendorff lieder on Hyperion with Fink, Genz and Vignoles)I have been converted.

The only downside to this CD is a impersonal feeling in the recording process. It is a little dry and two dimensional... not from want of trying from the performers.

This is a great recording of some of Wolf's greatest and most popular lieder. But also keep and eye out for the Hyperion Eichendorff lieder CD."
