Baroque Horn Concertos
Keegan R. Lerch | Bethlehem, PA | 06/20/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a fine disc of Baroque Horn Concerti. All of the French Horn players on this album play very well: it is consistently clean and crisp. Zdenìk Tylsar and Bedøich Tylsar, the main stars, are the principal horns of the Czech Philharmonic; they are joined by fellow Czech hornists Zdenìk Divoký and Jindøich Petrás.

Capella Istropolitana, conducted by Frantisek Vajnar also perform with great accuracy and style, and paint a perfect backdrop for the Horn soloists. The Horns are in the spotlight on the Telemann, Vivaldi, and L. Mozart pieces; they are not as prevalent in Handel's Concerto for Two Wind Groups, because this piece is more of a concerto grosso for a larger chamber group (two in this case). Get ready for a surprise on the last movement of L. Mozart's Sinfonia! This fourth to last and last tracks are the most exciting tracks, perhaps because of the added gunshots?

The peformances given on this album are styllistically accurate, which makes it even more of a pleasure to listen to. The Horn playing on this album is remarkably clean, and, when this high-calibre playing is supported by another equally excellent ensemble, the result is an easy-going listening experience."
A fine performance

"This is yet another fine CD by Zdenek and Bedrich Tylsar, two of the principle horn players of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.

I have become a big fan of the Tylsar's playing and the Vivaldi piece was the main reason I purchased this album. It is performed with the precision and beauty which I have come to expect from Zdenek and Bedrich.

While the solos in the CD are very good, I found that the actual compositions share the spotlight with the orchestra more than some of the other Tyslar CDs I have. This is certainly not a bad thing, but if you are looking for a CD with a larger spotlight on the soloists, I'd recommend one of the other Tylsar CDs, such as "Concertos for 2 Horns.""
