CD Reviews

A Gem from a Truly Underrated Band

"Not many people knew who the Hoodoo Gurus were when they were cranking out great rock'n'roll down under in the 1980s and I feel sorry for those people. With "Kinky" you have this legendary band at the top of their game. "I Don't Mind" and "A Place in the Sun" are just a few of the classic cuts on this solid album. No throw away tracks here, great from start to finish. Give them a listen!"
Not their greatest record...

"This CD is not particularly outstanding. With "Mars Needs Guitars" the Hoodoo Gurus' ability to write catchy lightweight guitar-pop was quite evident. Their songs on THAT CD were a terrific, fun set with a cute 1960s surfsey influence. The songs in THIS record, while still listeneable are nowhere near as inspired or as memorable. Kinky's not a complete waste of money, but there are better HG records around."
Great tunes, great rock'n'roll

"My favorite Hoodoo Gurus album. - Fond memories of rocking to this in grad school in the early 90s in Madison, WI, and still great... Just good rock'n'roll - fun, catchy lyrics a definite step above your average american rock band. Story telling, melodies, great guitars - how often do you find that? Alternates between thoughtful and just plain fun.

Miss Freelove '69 is both a tribute and a gentle-poking fun at the Summer of Love. "hot sake in my living room", indeed.

1000 Miles Away perfectly captures what it feels like to live on the road -- "been up before the sun and now I'm tired before I even begin" & "Spend half my time in airports..." -- the song really became my personal theme song when I was a consultant.

Don't be fooled by the lead-off track, Head in the Sand -- they're pissed off at an addicted friend. "What's it take to make you wide awake to yourself?" Hardest song on the album, and it works.

Brainscan -- A surfing song amped to 11 and a great tell-off.

Ballads, unapologetic party rock, love songs.

Great album, buy it. Then get Magnum Cum Louder. Give these Aussies a listen.
