CD Reviews

IT'S NOT ALL FORGOTTEN NOW
Barry McCanna | Normandy, France | 01/23/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"By the time these recordings came to be made, in July and August 1934, Ray Noble had already accepted an offer from RCA Victor to come to America to form an orchestra, and he took Al Bowlly with him. Thus the first fifteen tracks are the culmination of the chronological series; they begin with another Noble composition, "It's All Forgotten Now", and end appropriately with "Sing As We Go". The next two tracks feature the 2-part Ray Noble Medley, which Noble recorded in London, with the HMV house band, when he and Al returned briefly in August 1936.

That concluded Volume 13 of the LP boxed set on which this reissue was based, but there was a further LP entitled "The Rarities", and Vocalion has very sensibly completed this CD with eight tracks featuring recordings made by the New Mayfair Dance Orchestra between 1929 and October 1933, which feature some very hot arrangements and solos, not least by trumpeter Sylvester Ahola. The remainder of the rarities are included in Volume 10."
