When the Sonatas of III Parts were published in 1683, Henry Purcell presented an epoch-making cycle that was the first of its kind in England. Within one year of publishing, a second edition had to be printed. The exact history of the pieces' origins, whose manuscript is preserved in the British Library, is unknown.
