This double disc contains the complete original Henry Mancini best selling albums The Music From Peter Gunn and More Music From Peter Gunn, both of which present Mancini's popular scores for the celebrated Blake Edwards' Peter Gunn TV series. Featuring some of the most impressive West Coast jazzmen like Pete Candoli, Dick Nash, Victor Feldman, Shelly Manne & Larry Bunker. As a bonus, two additional complete LPs presenting alternative versions of these compositions by similar formations: one conducted by Pete Candoli, and the other by Ted Nash & Maxwell Davis. A single tune by Shelly Manne has also been added, which did not appear on our companion volume Shelly Manne & His Men Play Peter Gunn. American Jazz Classics. 2010.

CD Reviews

"worthwhile"

(4 out of 5 stars)

"First of all, "Not from Dixie" still contains the sound of an incorrect note that occurs about thirty seconds in (a trombone? plays a wrong note). I am sure the wrong "take" was used in the original PG release and it has simply continued in every issue since. Considering the multi-million status of this album, I am surprise that it was never commented on or corrected.

The tracks by Candoli and Nash are interesting variations, but unless you are looking for new interpretations of this music, they are unnecessary echoes of the originals. I enjoy Jimmy Rowles piano on the Candoli selections. He had a way of finding an interesting chord that augments the sound. If you don't already own Mancini's original Peter Gunn and More Music from Peter Gunn albums, this cd is a good choice. Otherwise, the additional selections on this cd are probably unnecessary, with the Candoli tracks being more original and the Nash tracks mere copies of the Mancini sounds."
