Sinding's piano pieces
Amy | 08/08/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Christian Sinding was a Norwegian composer. He was born in Kongsberg and studied music first in Oslo before going to Germany, where he studied at the conservatory in Leipzig. He lived in Germany mostof his life, but received regular grants from the Norwegian government. In the 1920's he went to the United States to teach composition for a season at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. Sinding composed a large number of short, lyrical piano pieces and songs that he wrote which has led many fans of classical music comparing him as the heir to his fellow countryman, Edvard Grieg. Sinding is also known to have been very outspoken and to always speak his mind. After his first piano sonata was premiered, a critic complained that it was "too Norwegian". Sinding replied that the next one would be even more so. Sinding is best remembered today for one of his piano works, Rustle of Spring. Among his other works which unfortunately are rarely performed, as Grieg overshadowed Sinding are four symphonies, three violin concertos, a piano concerto, chamber music, and an opera, Der Heilige Berg. This is a great cd and Helge Antoni does a wonderful job of playing this beautiful music that sadly is hardly ever heard or recorded. Just listen to the first track, Rustle of Spring and I think you will agree with me.
