Deathcore's Best

"Granted, I have not been listening to deathcore as a subgenre for a long period of time, but Heaven Shall Burn is the best I have heard so far. 'Iconoclast' is certainly no exception.

German powerhouse Heaven Shall Burn has produced a memorable album in Iconoclast. Many will label this band as metalcore, but it is metalcore and so much more, if you'll forgive the rhyme. All of the songs are heavy and brutal in the nasty way that metal should be. The drumming is tight, and just enough melody peeks through the blinding storm of aggression while not dominating the album.

There are no clean vocals here. Just relentless, harsh screams and growls. This blows traditional metalcore out of the water. Listen to it. You will like it.

'Iconoclast' gets a healthy 4.8/5 stars."

"There is a simple rule often overlooked in the field of metal today. It reads as such: You cannot like metal and not like Heaven Shall Burn. It just cannot be done. This band has it all. They are dark. They are heavy. They are fast when they want to be. They are sludgy when the need calls. Every single album this band has put out has been better than the last. This is the latest, and therefore greatest studio release from Heaven Shall Burn. For the newbies to HSB, each album plays like a concert from hell. This band is just so unrelentingly heavy and the songs are articulate and catchy. The time chages are pure circle-pit bliss and you cannot get bored listening to this band. Starting off this disc is the welcome return of the instrumental opener. This is something of a Heaven Shall Burn signature, possibly borrowed from Polish metal gods Vader. We all know how Peter loves his intros. (SIDEBAR - Does anyone else think the intro sounds eerily similar to the keyboards on Type O Negative's My Girlfriend's Girlfriend? I forgive them.) The true opener to this metal saga is the second track, Endziet. This is in my opinion the single strongest Heaven Shall Burn track layed down yet. This song makes me want to scream and break things and makes you believe in the ideals that HSB represent. This is a German band both proud of their country and blatantly honest about the burdens of their history. Being partly of German descent I identify with the anti-fascist rage and shame that HSB confronts with album after album. From their earliest tracks such as To Inherit The Guilt to the lines screaming about bodies piling up as the rightious storm the walls of Fortress Europe, this band has has something to say and they say it LOUDLY. The music says alot about the world today, most fittingy superimposed to the struggles of the underrepresented peoples of nations such as Iran. It is at once timely and classic. Above all this heavy subject matter is the fact that this band simply throws down and makes the listener have fun. Remember that? Fun? Yeah, that is what this is all about in the end. If you cannot enjoy your time spent on the ride, what is the point? For the newcomer to Heaven Shall Burn, this is a no-brainer. Buy this album. If you are wondering what Part Two is, it is the DVD set recently released featuring oodles of live footage that cements this band as a legitimate live band and not a studio production so common these days. Buy this album. Five stars."
