Sometimes, when everything goes right, you can't find the words. Sperlatives fail. Here we have three favourite Haydn symphonies, nos. 88, 95 and 101 (The Clock). The first was recorded with the Chicago Symphony in 1960, the other two with a group called simply Fritz Reiner and His Orchestra. These two were recorded a few months before Reiner's death, in 1963. The tempi are a little slow, the recorded sound mostly flawless and the overall effect hypnotic. The man was just as at ease with Haydn as he was with Richard Strauss. Fritz Reiner. His memory lives on."
