Synopsis

Amazon.com
A superb recording of Haydn's Saint Nicholas Mass on period instruments by Trevor Pinnock conducting the English Concert. One needn't be an expert in Haydn or in classical vocal music to enjoy the brilliant clarity of the orchestra or the fecundity of Haydn's writing, and the soloists--Nancy Argenta, Catherine Robbin, Michael Schade, and Alastair Miles--are perfect. The Theresienmesse, a mass in B flat minor, is also featured on this disc. --Joshua Cody

Haydn: Missa Sancti Nicolai/Theresienmesse
Bjorn Viberg | European Union | 10/21/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Haydn: Missa Sancti Nicolai/Theresienmesse is a tremendous recording being of Choir of the English concert & The English Concert being led by the amazing Trevor Pinnock. The sound quality is so good that one verily feels that one is listening to this recording live. The assembly of singers is right on the mark and Catherine Robbin and Nancy Agenta to mention a few really do an outstanding job. Peter Hanson the premier violinist is also commendable. As it is with Deutsche Grammophon realease once more they do a great job with the book-let and thephotographs are very nice, the cover is chosen with care and the essay written by A. Peter Brown is both well-written and informative. On the whole I give this splendid recording 5 stars."
