CD Reviews

Hawkwind - 'Choose Your Masques Live 1982' (Voiceprint)
Mike Reed | USA | 01/22/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Starts off with a few songs one may not hear to often anymore like "Choose Your Masques","Coded Languages" and "Dust Of Time".Really good to hear "Magnu","Waiting For Tomorrow","Angels Of Death","Utopia" and "Brainstorm" as the sound quality on this 2-CD release is very good, not great but VERY GOOD,like you(the listener)are at the gig.Have to admit the appreciative crowd sounds like they're having the time of their life, not like the snoozing zombies that attended the show on the band's 'Palace Springs' disc. You can easily notice Nik Turner's sax or flute on many of the numbers played, especially on "Social Alliance","Arrival In Utopia" and "Ejection".The encore is "Shot Down The Night" and "Master Of The Universe".'Choose...' was recorded over a two-night stand at the Hammersmith Odeon on November 12 and 13,1982.The line-up boasts of three original members,Turner,Dave Brock and guitarist Huw Lloyd Langton.Comes with a nice 16-page full color booklet with photos from THAT tour. Also includes an application for the Hawkwind passport.Highly recommended."
Live Choose Your Mask Tour 2CD set
Mark Skaret | CT in the US | 03/31/2000
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This is a nice FM quality recording of the 1982 Masks Tour. Thelineup is Brock, Bainbridge, Langton, Turner & Griffin. It has anice booklet with the lyrics (though printed rather small) Songs are Choose Your Mask,Coded Languages, Magnu, Angels of Death,Psychedelic Warlords, a killer version of Social Alliance, Waiting for Tomorrow, Solitary Mind Games, Brainstorm with Ejection-Shot Down In The Night-Master Of the Universe combined as an encore. It is an album which will be enjoyed bay any true Hawkwind fan. The quality could be a bit better as the name implyes, but it's not too bad."
2nd CD achieves liftoff
happydogpotatohead | New Orleans, LA USA | 08/29/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"It's a bit misleading to call this "Choose Your Masques." They should have called it "Choose Your Masques Tour." All that aside, this is a good recording of a live show from the brief period in the 80s when Nik Turner rejoined the band. The sound is much better than on Collectors' Series Vol. 1, all the instruments are audible and the balance is good. But enough with the technical details. Does it achieve Hawkwindness? Is there BLANGA? Yep. The first CD starts out a bit proggy, but by the 2nd CD the band is in full Blanga mode and attains enough altitude to leave the atmosphere in the way a live Hawkwind recording should. Nik Turner is appropriately hilarious and over-the-top here, and he can afford to be; the band is very solid and at times quite vicious, especially on the second CD. And why isn't Huw Lloyd-Langton more well-known as a guitar hero than he is?
This is an excellent CD for the Hawkwind fan; most of them will want to have this. Good 80's blanga. For the newcomer, this might be an OK intro, but the Sacred Texts (In Search Of Space, Doremi Fasol Latido, Space Ritual) should be perused first by novice space cadets."
