Album Description Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1974 release from the British Prog/Art rockers including bonus tracks. Recorded for Virgin Records, Hatfield And The North was the eponymous debut album by the band comprising former Caravan member Richard Sinclair, keyboard player Dave Stewart, guitarist Phil Miller and drummer Pip Pyle. Regarded as one of the finest albums in the Canterbury genre, the album also featured guest appearances by Geoff Leigh of Henry Cow and Robert Wyatt, who sang guest vocals on the track 'Calyx'. This reissue adds both sides of a 1974 single and at track originally featured on the Virgin sampler album V, together with a booklet featuring restored artwork and notes by Sid Smith. Much of the debut sounds like ambient sounds combined with light jazz. Every so often you can hear some Camel and Caravan influences, however, on this album, the band doesn't quite have the memorable songwriting that the former two bands had since the very beginning. Some of the instrumental jams are a bit too messy and quiet to catch my attention. BUT, that's not really important, since I still really love this debut album anyway. The female vocals are delicate and beautiful as well. Some of the songs sound humorous, but much like Gong, it doesn't interfere with the more serious sounding songs- just adds more diversity and makes the bands talent stand out that much more." Maybe it's like Piers Anthony's Macroscope - it will only work if you have a certain intelligence level. I guess I'm not at that level? I see people really love this one, but I can't stand it. If you are into Caravan or Camel, this album is nothing like those bands. I only gave it two stars because its better than all the one-star radio garbage. At least it's interesting and different - just like Frank Zappa's Jazz from Hell - and equally as difficult to listen to as the FZ album. I ebayed mine after giving it a serious chance.
Just goes to show you how different people's music tastes are. I love all those progressive bands from the 70's, but this one is a real dog, in my opinion. And this is the one people wanted if they could have one album on a desert island? Geez...." |
