CD Reviews

The Hang Ups do Husker Du doing the Byrds
Jonathan J. Casey | the twin cities | 02/28/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

""Eight Miles High" is from a Husker Du tribute CD, which is kinda funny, especially since the Hang Ups owe part of their sound to the Byrds. Their other big influence is the Kinks, and I highly recommend seeing them perform "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere," "Big Sky" and "She's Got Everything" live."Comin' Through" is an excellent song, with the Hang Ups' trademark harmonies shining like sun through the clouds. "This Is The Hand" showcases a country-pop sound, and is a good example of the kind of songwriting Brian Tighe excells at: friendly melodies laced with bittersweet lyrics. "Runway" comes from their first full length album "He's After Me" (produced by Ed Ackerson of Polara) and is a perfect pop song, starting the tradition followed by "Long Goodbye" and "Greyhound Bus" from "Second Story" and "So We Go," respectively. For a long time nothing cheered me up quite like the Hang Ups. They're under-appreciated outside of the midwest, I think, and it may be that they're a little too provincial for the general public. Don't let that stop you from tasting some of my bliss. "Comin' Through" is a song you shouldn't miss and this EP is a great introduction to a gem of a band."
