Gregorian Chant from the Hofburg Chapel Choir
Philly Gal | Philadelphia, PA USA | 12/08/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"VOX first released this recording in 1993 on their Allegretto label as CD No. ACD8156, and it has good front liner notes with the Latin verse, English translation, and an explanatory comment on the relevance of each of the 18 tracks. Here is almost an hour of fine, evenly-paced sacred chant from the choir of the Vienna Hofburg Chapel, providing a good overview of the "modes" of chant, and types of verse used for different dates in the liturgical calendar. For some events, more than one mode is delivered in separate hymns (introits, offertories, Communions). The listener will get a good sense of the variety of traditional chant - it does not all sound the same, as some might be inclined to say. Gregorian chant is soothing, and for good reason chant recordings are frequently used for meditation and various types of therapy. This particular recording is a typically excellent Vox mastering, clear, resonant, and level throughout."
