CD Reviews

Same as the King Biscuit Flower Hour release
Robert Huggins | Suburban Philadelphia, PA United States | 01/24/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If you want to hear a live recording of Greg Lake and are looking to save a few bucks in the process, then get this CD. It's the exact same recording as the King Biscuit Flower Hour version . . . even the sequence of the songs is the same. King Biscuit's music releasing arm, Pet Rock Records, has licensed many of the King Biscuit recordings to "no frills" budget labels such as BMG Special Products (Extended Versions: The Encore Collection) and EMI-Capitol Music Special Markets (The Live Series), among others. Here, Lake does some solo material (so-so), some material from his lead guitarist for this 1981 tour, Gary Moore (good), some material from his days with Emerson, Lake & Palmer (better), and saves the best for last, two classic songs from his early days with King Crimson (21st Century Schizoid Man, The Court of the Crimson King). Although there is a keyboard player in the band, the music has more of a guitar sound to it, thanks largely to the contributions of Moore. Lake's voice still sounds good here and, although there are only 10 songs on the CD, it's fairly representative of his career up to 1981.My four star rating is actually closer to ***1/2."
Much better than expected
L. Goings | Chi-town | 03/25/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There have been many different shows released in the "Live" series. Many of them have middling quality live performances but this album is not one of them. I bought it because it was really cheap and expected a good track or if I was lucky maybe two. Imagine my surprise when the whole disc was full of high quality (both the performance and the sound quality) material. If you are a Greg Lake or an ELP fan you will love this one. Even at a normal price this album is a must-have and at this price it's a steal. I own most everything ELP has released and this one is still a welcome addition to my music collection. I didn't have these versions of the songs on any of the other releases."
Still adjusting
Jack E. Carlson | San Diego, CA | 10/04/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Having following Lake since when he was with King Crimson, I'm still adjusting to his lower voice, especially when he performs songs from his ELP years. It took a while before I got used to and started really enjoying Black Moon. Now I think I'm getting used to hearing him sing the old stuff, and this album helps.

He still has a good voice and his guitar work is just as creative as before. I'm not usually a big fan of "live" albums, but these recordings keep the focus on the performer and don't overwhelm us with audience reaction. (Note: it does no good to shout "shut up and sit down, I want to hear this" at a recording of a live performance, though doing so can be cathartic)

This is a reasonably priced representation of "the best" of Greg Lake. If you are a fan of ELP or Asia, or if you listen to groups like Yes and Pink Floyd, you'll probably find something you like on this collection."
