CD Reviews

Required for any BJ library
C. MacNeil | Fort Wayne, IN USA | 02/28/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Now in his fifth decade of showing us what a real artist is supposed to be, rock-country-gospel singer BJ Thomas treats us to some of the very best of his best hits in this 1972 compilation. A must-have for any BJ library (and shame on the die-hard fan who hasn't got it), the disc features BJ's first classics like "Hooked On A Feeling," "Billy and Sue" and "Eyes of a New York Woman" to some of his later chart-busters like "I Just Can't Help Believing," "Rock and Roll Lull-a-bye" and the quintessential classic and Oscar-winner "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" (which some might say is Thomas' signature song, though he's had so many BJ-identified hits that they all qualify). Some of the favorites then and now continue to be "Billy and Sue," the song of love doomed to death on a battlefield of war, the hyper-energetic "Eyes of a New York Woman," the simplicity of unconditional love and soulfulness of "I Just Can't Help Believing," and the moving force of maternal love in "Rock and Roll Lull-a-bye." Like most of Thomas' compilations, you can put this one end and not notice the hours spent in pure enjoyment. The kid from Oklahoma knows how to do it!"
Worth it

"As a collector of hard to find singles from the 70's, I found this to be the best compilation of Thomas' top-40 material. Particularly nice to find were "Don't Worry Baby" and "Everybody Loves A Rain Song," both released when he was under contract with MCA."
Dang, it's missing a few

"Bought this brand new from a used CD store on the fly. Didn't notice at the time that it's missing these: Most of All, Mama, No Love at All, and Plain Jane. Guess I'll have to shop around to pick those up. Thought this was all inclusive of the hits, but maybe it's based on the studio he was with at the time, which always messes up "Best of" compilations."
