Solid Southern Gospel

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album has some of my favorite GV music on it. I've been listening to it since last spring, and I'm not tired of it yet! This is the last project with Jason Waldroup on it (as far as I'm aware).

The first song, "It Means Just What It Says" went high on the Singing News charts. It's an up-beat affirmation that the Bible really does contain everything we need to make it to Heaven.

The group moved back towards their earlier style with this album. Most of the arrangements are simpler and not so highly orchestrated; instead they have a lot of the more traditional SG instrumentation like steel guitar. (Yeah, I know some folks would argue that's not traditional.)

But the arrangements are beautiful, and many of the harmonies are complex. As usual, most of the songs are by Rodney Griffin, with a few new ones and a few classics. It doesn't have the "big ballad" featuring Gerald Wolfe that many projects do, like "It Is Well With My Soul," but he puts in strong performances on "I Just Came To Talk With You, Lord" and "Too Much to Gain to Lose."

The project has a mix of feel-good songs like the first one and "Everyday People" (two of my favorites), along with meaningful, encouraging songs with deep lyrics like "Who Else Do You Need" and "Above and Beyond."

It is one that I put on when I'm down and needing a lift, and so to me it fulfills one of the deepest purposes of gospel music."
