CD Reviews

The bass to listen to.
Fritz Lincoln | New York, NY | 08/30/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As a bass vocalist, I listen to Ghiaurov more often than Siepi, Christoff, Chaliapin...

His singing is so legato, so bel canto. The voice is big, rich, vibrant, and simply gorgeous.

If you enjoy this cd, i recommend getting Bellini's I Puritani with Ghiaurov, Pavarotti, and Sutherland. Listen to Ghiaurov's "Cinta di fiori.""
Massive, handsome, royal voice!

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Not many tracks but enough to enjoy this grand singer. He had one of those voices who benefit more from a live performance rather than a studio recording and though everything here is wonderfully sung, I find him a bit too polished. Ghiaurov in live recordings of the same roles sounds just right in these roles. In any case, the Nabucco and Vespri scenes are my favourites here. For further listening, one of his best studio performances of this early period is Henry VIII in Souliotis' Anna Bolena recording.

4 stars not because of Ghiaurov but because there are live compilations of his art that will impress the listener more in my opinion."
