"The combination of conductor Dorati, with the Detroit Symphony, recorded by London/Decca, has been a winning combination. The Porgy and Bess Symphonic Picture is the reason to buy this disc. It is the original version and has a beauty and feeling that cannot be desribed. The Detroit players play beautifully, completely understanding this music being in the heart of Americana. The London engineers have once again captured the Detroit in all of its glory. Listen to the three dimensional sound and clarity of the opening english horn. Then, listen to the trumpet solo at about 1:38 seconds into the piece. Turn up the volume and revel in the glory of beautiful digital sound. You will never hear a solo trumpet recorded in an orchestra so clearly and the solo is performed gorgeously. The Grofe is fine, very well recorded. Enjoy this disc. NOTE: This is a recording from the early digital era by London/Decca and in my opinion, they have produced some of the most amazing digital sound in the industry. Listen to all of the 1980-1985 Detroit Dorati Decca recordings and you will hear sound that totally eclipses anything current. I cannot understand why, but it's true. See all London/Decca recordings of the Dutoit/Montral Symphony from the same period and you will hear some of the most amazing digital sound in the recording industry."
