CD Reviews

Gotthard does it again!
Justin Gaines | Northern Virginia | 10/26/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"In a perfect world, Gotthard would be huge rock stars here in America. Nobody, and I mean nobody, can touch this band when it comes to creating first rate, commercially accessible melodic rock music. Sadly, there are precious few Americans who will discover this band. At least they're still huge in their home country of Switzerland, with somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 straight platinum-selling releases. Now the Swiss have different criteria for platinum status than we do, but that, along with several consecutive number 1 releases, is still a very impressive feat.

Domino Effect is the band's latest effort, following on the heels of the fantastic 2005 album Lipservice. I'm a bit biased, as I think Lipservice is the band's finest hour, but Domino Effect is still a fantastic album. This is the natural evolution of the "party rock" bands of the past like Y&T, Autograph, and to some extent Van Halen. Gotthard isn't stuck in the past though. They've managed to refine and progress that style into something modern that still displays a clear "old school" foundation. Instead of getting introspective and alternative (whatever that's supposed to mean these days), Gotthard decided to keep on rocking, and that's what Domino Effect does. Like previous Gotthard albums, this is a completely fun, upbeat rock & roll album full of catchy guitar hooks and of course Steve Lee's powerful vocals. With most bands I could do without the ballads, but Gotthard's are just as good as their full-on rockers.

Domino Effect is another in a long line of fantastic albums from a band that deserves a much larger audience. I can't imagine any longtime Gotthard fan being disappointed by this one, but it should also appeal to anyone who likes good, fun, rock & roll music.

NOTE: There are a few different versions of Domino Effect on the market. In terms of price and bonus material, the US version of Domino Effect seems to be the best of the bunch. The early Japanese and Korean imports featured one bonus track called Superman. The Tour Edition includes a bonus disc of acoustic tracks. The more affordable US version includes an impressive 5 bonus tracks - a studio number called Can't Be the Real Thing (which for my money is probably the best song on the album) plus the standard and Spanish language versions of Lipservice hits Anytime, Anywhere and Lift U Up - as well as a completely entertaining video for Anytime, Anywhere. If you caught the band's video for Lift U Up (included on the US version of Lipservice), you know just how awesome this band's videos are, and this one is no exception."

"I've only recently got into Gotthard, after seeing them play live at Firefest in the UK 2006.

Domino Effect is the third album of theirs I have purchased, and once listened, couldn't belive that Domino Effect was better than Lip Service. WOW

Domino Effect has songs that will appeal to anyone, and doesn't allow you to get bored with it when you keep on hitting the replay button.

This album is a must for any Gotthard fans, plus anyone out there, that wants to try something different and doesn't want to be disappointed.

Well recommended. (PS if you get chance to go and see them on their Domino Effect Tour - Do so - ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC :-)"

"Who would have thought! After the superb album "Lipservice" I think alot of fans thought that would be the pinacle of Gotthard's career and things would get stale cause surely there was no way to beat that. No way!! This is another great album filled with rock songs in a class of their own. The highlight as always is Steve Lee's vocals. What can you say about this guy, absolutely powerhouse singing time and time again. He gives en emotional delivery and comes up with great melodic lines that make you want to listen to every word. This album also comes with 4 nice bonus tracks that all fans will love. Highly recommended to Gotthard fans and definitely in my top 10 albums of 2007."
