CD Reviews

Cheap way to aquire Bach played by Gould
Flatus Maximus | 10/30/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Don't let the cheap case fool you (and beleive me it is cheap and flimsy), inside are 12 official 2002 issue Sony Classical cd's of Glenn Gould playing Bach's music mostly for solo keyboard (there is one cd of Gould playing Bach keyboard concertos). They all come with their own original covers and liner notes. I picked up my copy on sale for $17 but even at twice that price it's still a good deal. I wanted the Bach but didn't want to pay either the $100 for the Gould Plays

Bach Original Jacket edition or the $200 for the mammoth Complete Glenn Gould Original Jacket collection.

Too good a deal to pass up
Kenneth M. Osowski | Stewartstown, PA USA | 04/15/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I do not consider myself a Gould "devotee." However, when I spotted this collection on sale for less than $50, I jumped at it. I have always deeply admired both of Gould's Goldberg recordings, and they are both here, along with almost all of his solo Bach - the French Suites, English Suites, Partitas, Inventions, Sinfonias, Toccatas, and a few others (the Well-Tempered Clavier is not here, but it is also available as an inexpensive import). I do not always agree with Gould's way with Bach, but he is hard to ignore, and his playing can be inspired and inspiring, even when it contradicts my musical instincts. In short, this set is an unbeatable deal, and it will nicely complement another favorite Bach baragin (Maria Tipo's 5-CD set on EMI) in my collection. Tipo is more "my style" - more red-blooded and lush - but Gould is endlessly fascinating and though-provoking."
