CD Reviews

An unlikely pairing delivers great music
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 03/23/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Gene, a major pop singer who had also recorded an album of folk songs, and George, a country music legend, were two of the biggest stars on the Musicor label. Apparently, Gene was already knowledgeable about country music and was a long-time fan of George. With the Jordanaires on backing vocals, they recorded two outstanding albums together, both to be found on this CD.Although the majority of the tracks are duets, there are three solos by each. Gene's solos are I really don't want to know (an Eddy Arnold song), I can't stop loving you (the Don Gibson classic that became an international pop hit when Ray Charles covered it) and Born to lose. George's solos were Things have gone to pieces, Love bug and My favorite lies. The first two were released as singles and both were country top ten hits.Several of the duets were released as singles but they were less successful than George's solos. I've got five dollars and it's Saturday night made the country top twenty, while Louisiana man made the country top thirty.Among the other duets, there are excellent covers of My shoes keep walking back to you, Sweeter than the flowers, Don't rob another man's castle, Wreck on the highway, Mockin' bird hill, Y'all come, Someday you'll want me to want you and Why baby why. These albums sold quite well and the time and make an excellent addition to any collection of Gene Pitney or George Jones music."

"As a lifelong George Jones fan, I was surprised to find that he did a duet CD with Gene Pitney in the 60's. I was also amazed that, after listening to the CD, Gene Pitney could have made it as a country singer! I have been listening to the CD since I received it and I absolutely love it. If you are a fan of either artist, I would highly recommend this CD."
