Synopsis

Product Description
George Flynn - American City Southport Records (S-SSD 0129) "George Flynn, who studied with such important figures as Vladimir Ussachevsky and Otto Luening is clearly in the line of mid-century avant-garde composers." -Gordon Rumson, International Piano Quarterly Southport Records and The Southport Composers Series present pianist/composer George Flynn - "American City." Flynn, late in his career as a faculty member at DePaul University in Chicago, made the decision to write a work for each of the major ensembles in the School of Music- the chorus/chamber choir (St. Vincent's Words, 1995), the orchestra (The Density of Memory, 1997) and wind ensemble (American City, 1998). These works are all performed by DePaul University musicians - faculty, students and an alumna, and were recorded in the DePaul University Concert Hall (2006-2007.) "American City" is conducted by Donald DeRoche and features Amy Briggs on piano. "The Density of Memory" is conducted by Cliff Colnot and features Larry Combs, Julie DeRoche and Wagner Campos on clarinets. "St. Vincent's Words" is conducted by Clayton Parr and features Amanda DeBoer-soprano, Nathalie Colas-alto, John Cotterell-tenor and Chris Filipowicz-bass. The music of George Flynn is no mere stance; his melodies are full of circumstance. George Flynn's compositions have the ability to overwhelm and amaze with intense expression and musical abandon. George Flynn (b. 1937) grew up in Montana and Washington, and counts Ives' Concord Sonata as an early important musical influence. He later studied and taught at Columbia University, New York City, while performing new music in a variety of New York venues. He also taught at Lehmann College (CUNY) before coming to DePaul University's School of Music in Chicago, where he chaired Musicianship Studies and Composition for 25 years. Flynn currently co-directs DePaul's professional new music performance series "New Music DePaul," as well as Chicago's "New Music at the Green Mill" series. He has composed about 150 works in all media, including nearly six hours of piano solo music, and is performed internationally. As a pianist and composer Flynn has performed and recorded new music for many years in the US and Europe, and has recorded for Turnabout, ATCO, Finnadar, Wounded Bird and Southport Records. "American City" is a new release from The Southport Composers Series. This series of sound experiments and compositions documents new classical music from Chicago to a world market. SOUTHPORT RECORDS - THE SOUTHPORT COMPOSERS SERIES
Southport Records was founded in 1977 by pianist/composer/engineer Bradley Parker-Sparrow in response to the lack of production of new music in Chicago, from Chicago. The label focuses on new music of any form from Chicago artists and projects it to a world market.
