CD Reviews

Genesis - 'In The Beginning' (Black Box)
Mike Reed | USA | 07/11/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"To make it a little bit more confusing, this band IS the UK band we all know for featuring Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, etc. Overall, the music here isn't bad, best described as psychedelic. Like the way this reissue expands to a 2-CD release, featuring a total of twenty-three tracks. Some of the tunes here I found to be somewhat inspiring were "Where The Sour Turns To Sweet", "Serpent", "In Limbo" and the demo for "Try A Little Sadness". Apparently, there was an American band by the same name that released a sole lp in the late '60's and vanished after that."
Germany? Heavy Metal?

"And NO relation to the popular UK group Genesis in any way either. This is major label American psychedelia at it's best. Originally released on Mercury Records in late 1967, this group from Los Angeles had a heavy, yet versatile sound. This LP has nice arrangements with heavy fuzz guitar reminiscent of Iron Butterfly and The Maze. "Angeline", "One Second Song" and "Gloomy Sunday" are the standout tracks, although the whole LP is very good. With male/female vocal harmonies, the female vocals are up there with the Nancy trinity (Nansi Nevins, Nancy Nairn and Nancy Blossom) and the wonderful Dorothy Moskowitz. Highly recommended! NO German metal here folks, just good ol' 60's acid rock!"
