Synopsis

For sheer attitude, it's hard to top this '50s legend, whose greasy hair, black leather outfits, and finger-in-socket wailing symbolized the spirit of early rock & roll. While his debut single, 1956's eternal "Be-Bop-A-Lula," was his only Top 10 hit, lust-dripping songs like "Woman Love," "Lotta Lovin'" and "Crazy Legs," and pile-driving, out-of-breath raveups such as "Race with the Devil," "Bluejean Bop," and "B-I Bickey-Bi, Bo-Bo-Bo," became part of the rock & roll textbook. The rockabilly king was particularly influential in England, where his look reigned supreme, and where the Blue Caps' lead guitarist, Cliff Gallup, influenced the likes of Jimmy Page and (especially) Jeff Beck. --Billy Altman
