Synopsis

Innovative drummer Gene Krupa (he was the first to record with a bass drum as a member of the McKenzie-Condon Chicagoans in 1927) became an international star as a featured performer in the Benny Goodman band; his solo on "Sing, Sing, Sing," from the 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert, became a hit single and inspired generations of jazz and rock drummers. Let Me Off Uptown documents Krupa's own band in 1949 recordings that feature the great trumpeter Roy Eldridge. The title track was a characteristically upbeat hit single for Krupa. His hard-swinging style is well represented by "Disc Jockey Jump," "Gee Bop," "Gene's Boogie," and "Birdhouse." --John Swenson
