"Gaspare Spontini is not exactly well-known, but La Vestale proves he should be. Don't be fooled by the melifluous name - he is NOT a proto-Rossini or Donizetti. Vestale is a grave work written in 1807 with a powerful dramatic and exquisite music.This particular performance was recorded in 1951 and is mono. Usually I avoid old recordings because....well, you know why. But this recording, even though pre-hi fi, is powerful. Maria Vitale (who sings the role Callas also sang, the Vestale Virgin)is occasionally flat on the high notes, but overall it's well sung; the conducting is excellent. And!!! No audience or stage noise!!!This is a fine recording of a great opera."
