CD Reviews

A vintage collection of orchestral bon-bons by a master
06/03/1999
(4 out of 5 stars)

"In the 1950's and early '60's, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra - under the legendary leadership of its French music director, Paul Paray - made a series of superb recordings for Mercury that were an audiophile's dream. The recordings had a close-up audio fidelity that still makes an incredible visceral impact and the interpretations were among the very best available in the U.S. or Europe. Representative of the DSO/Paray recordings at their best is this generously compiled cd. The music is all orchestral bon-bons of French music, a genre over which Paray was a supreme master. For sheer lyric melody that your mind will soon find obsessive , try the seldom revived Overture to "Phedre" by Massenet. The dance rhythms of the "Faust" ballet music have never sounded so joyously sprung and the delicacy of the Act II waltz will leave you begging for more. The Herold and Auber overtures are typical of Paray's dramatically intense style at its best. Only Berlioz' "Royal Hunt and Storm" may seem marginally more tentative than a similar vintage account by Munch and the BSO, but this is a very minor quibble. All in all, this is a wonderful memento of a great orchestra and its legendary conductor at their prime."
