CD Reviews

Flute artistry of the highest order! A treasure!
Ron M. | Rutherford, NJ USA | 05/09/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In terms of artistry, of phrasing and interpretation, Paige Brook has no equal among flutists past or present. The way he phrases and connects notes puts him head and shoulders above the likes of any of the so-called great flutists -- Rampal, Kincaid, Galway, Baker, Bennett -- and the host of younger pretenders to the throne (Pahud, Alexa Still, et al.) who currently dot the landscape.

The musical intelligence at work here is no less than astonishing.

This CD should be required listening for all aspiring flutists -- it is a virtual master class in phrasing and interpretation for the flute.

While other flutists play will-'o-the-wisp pretty for the sake of playing

pretty, or try to snow you with virtuosity for the sake of virtuosity,

Mr. Brook pays attention to the music itself, unafraid to attack and articulate when the music calls for it, to phrase and separate the notes with superb attention to nuance and detail. This is truly playing of the highest order.

If you love the flute, you must have this CD. It is a musical treasure.
