CD Reviews

"still my favorite sinatra album"
Boston Blackie | Boston, MA USA | 06/10/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Let's put it this way, if I was stranded on a deserted island and could have only one CD for the rest of my life, "Sinatra at the Sands" would be it! I've read the other reviews and understand that many (not all, by any means) of his studio albums are artistically superior. But we need to remember that Sinatra broke in singing for live audiences, from the Rustic Cabin to the Meadowlands and everything in between. I also love hearing some of the latest releases on Rhino and other labels, of Sinatra's live radio performances - some of those airchecks are just fabulous! Sometimes studio recordings are like looking at a tiger in the zoo, or worse, like viewing a stuffed tiger in a museum! Live performances are true to life and unique, no second takes. Frank Sinatra really wails and puts his heart into these tracks - "Where or When" is a song he sang throughout his career and is almost overlooked on this album, but it is a standout. "Angel Eyes", "Street of Dreams", "The Shadow of Your Smile" are just terrific. Hearing Sinatra engage the audience and hearing their enthusiasm - I just kick back and imagine myself there!"
The Best Sinatra Album of all his great works

"A truly great album and sadly an end to a great era of music in the US

with his passing and Count Bassie as well. You will love this album.

Sinatra At His Best

"Nothing like listening to Sinatra with Count Basie's orchestra performing in front of a live audience. The arrangements and performances were vintage Sinatra. My only complaint was his extended monolog. The great music more than made up for this flat spot."
