CD Reviews

Essential collection for fans of FH
a music fan | Portland, OR United States | 12/21/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Despite reports of the imminent death of the CD format, 2009 has been an amazing year for CD box sets. The Beatles, Buddy Holly and the 13th Floor Elevators have all finally gotten the CD reissues they deserve, and so have two of the best French pop singers of the 60's.

This collection contains Françoise Hardy's first six albums, released on the Vogue label between 1962 and 1966, plus bonus tracks from her EPs of the same period. There are a few songs missing that really should have been included as bonus tracks (such as her fantastic version of Catch a Falling Star) and it would have been nice to get some unreleased material, but for the most part, this is the collection that FH fans have been waiting for.

A Talent In Embryo

(4 out of 5 stars)

"The packaging is excellent: a nifty little box containing the six CD-albums, each in a scaled-down replica of the individual vinyl album-cover (complete with cardboard inner-sleeve) as well as an informative booklet - only in French, please note - giving details about each album and placing it in its historical context. However, the problem with this kind of packaging is that each CD only contains around 30 minutes of music - even those with a number of bonus tracks. In fact, the entire collection could've been easily contained on three CD's.

The sound is also extraordinarily vivid, much more so than on the single-disc compilation I have of some of the same songs. This is no rushed mastering-job: it's clearly designed to be the definitive version of this material.

As for the music, it's highly melodic and romantic 60's-pop with a penchant for swaying 6/8 rhythms and delicious melancholy but I feel it's let down by Hardy's singing, especially on the earlier albums. While her voice is always sweet and melodic, it's under-characterized. In fact, the only thing stopping it from being insipid is the sense that there's a real talent just waiting to emerge - a belief that would be amply confirmed by some of her later albums. Here, however, while she's superb when the material requires delicacy and reserve she is severely wanting when the songs call for projection and drama. Her voice gradually acquired more character and personality over the years and reached its fruition on the great trio of albums, "Ma Jeunesse Fout Le Camp", "Comment Te Dire Adieu", and "La Question" a few years later. And I'd direct any newcomer to Hardy's music to those luscious albums first before examining the juvenilia on this collection. For rabid Hardy-fans, however, I'd suggest this box will be an essential purchase. The sound and packaging are first-rate."
