CD Reviews

Sor: Early 19th Century Guitar Hero
David Conklin | Albuquerque, NM USA | 11/14/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There are 10 CDs in this fine Naxos series of Fernando Sor's work for solo guitar. Three of them are included in the most recent (2007) Gramophone Guide, and this one (volume 7) received the highest recommendation. Of all the CDs in this series, this one may well have the broadest appeal, as it consists (entirely) of some of Sor's most interesting, melodically advanced, and difficult (to play) compositions. Canadian guitarist Jeffrey McFadden performs them beautifully; sound quality is excellent. The pieces flow together nicely, providing a relaxing and tasteful listening experience suitable for most occasions. Several other CDs in this Sor series, while also of general interest, contain simpler works/studies (e.g., Op. 35, 44, 48, and 60) that will appeal most to (and are invaluable for) guitarists learning these pieces."
