CD Reviews

Jose Van Dam at his finest.
W. N. Hay | Princeton, NJ United States | 05/04/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The great bass-baritone Jose Van Dam has enjoyed a long career in opera, song and oratorio. He has been recording for nearly forty years and still does not cease to amaze his listener. This CD of French songs represents a good variety of composers such as Faure, Ibert, Duparc, Ropartz and Poulenc. The songs by Faure are pretty well known. Van Dam sings these songs very musically and with great beauty of tone. Songs by Henri Duparc fit Jose Van Dam's voice perfectly. Especially notable is his beautiful soft voice in Extase. This group of Duparc songs includes Le Gallop which is rarely performed. The Chanson de Don Quichotte by Jacques Ibert are an old friend for Jose Van Dam. He has recorded them several times with great success. These songs really fit the character of Don Quichotte. The soft high note that ends the last of these four songs has never been sung more beautifully. Guy Ropartz is a wonderful composer that is not very well known. These songs are also sung very well on this CD. The Poulenc cycle is also wonderful music. Some of the songs are as short as thirty seconds but they work really well. Jose Van Dam is a master at changing the color of his voice to express emotion. He is also a master of the French language. I highly recommend this CD."
