Synopsis

Album Description
2010 two CD release. Carl Maria von Weber`s opera Der Freischtz (The Marksman) established his reputation as leading opera composer during the early Romantic period in Germany. The Berlin performance held on 18 June 1821 was attended by E. T. A. Ho mann, the young Felix Mendelssohn and Heinrich Heine and the city`s enthusiastic response was soon to take on the proportions of a veritable Freischtz fever. Weber`s response to the predominance of Italian belcanto proved triumphant and was to become a byword for popular German opera - the opera was staged no less than 500 times in Berlin alone up until 1884. The work was translated into many languages and has remained an integral part of opera repertory to this very day. This historic recording was made in 1955 under Erich Kleiber and presents a well-versed Freischtz ensemble of singers, including Elisabeth Grmmer, Hans Hopf, Rita Streich and Kurt B"hme. Documents.
