CD Reviews

ELP the way they were meant to be heard.

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I believe that the only ELP that one needs in their collection are the live recordings (Bootleg series Vol 1,2,3; Welcome Back; Pictures At An Exhibition; Isle of Wight). The first show in this box set is the November 26, 1972 show at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. The sound quality is listenable, albeit the worst in the set. The music is perfectly discernable, but Emerson's stage patter is not clearly heard. The virtue of this box set are the remaining three shows (Henry Lewit Arena in Witchita, Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, and the Civic Center in New Haven) covering the latter part of ELP's life in the 70's as a touring band. The middle two shows date from 1974 and cover the important Brain Salad Surgery era of the band. Not only is this the most important era of the band, but of prog rock in general as the band merged artistic achievment with commercial success. These two shows present the listener, in an excellent audience recording, with some of the only live versions of the important Karn Evil 9 suite which they only did on this tour, with the Carl Palmer drum solo within the first impression. The only negative is that the tapers in Kansas ran out of tape for the encores. The New York show contains one of the most inspired, though weird, versions of Pictures committed to tape. The final show is the soundboard recording from New Haven on the fall 1977 tour. This was ELPs tour to recoup the losses from the disasterous summer tour with the orchestra. The show is very effective with an excellent quality live version of their classic song "Pirates". These recordings are not officially mastered, sanitized versions of their live prowess. Rather, these recordings are raw "you are there to hear" documents of one of the premier prog rock bands of the 70's. You can not buy a more perfect title through Amazon.com that represents the appeals of prog rock than this."

"Yes - I like this one even better than vol. 1. Not for those who want prefect sound quality. Only for those who appreciate great music, no matter 'where' it comes from. The Buffalo 1974 concert (also known as the 2CD bootleg "Impressions") has been one of the most sought after ELP recordings: the 'Pictures' version is completely crazy. The Hammersmith Odeon, London 1972 concert is also known as "Cut the Organ" and the Wichita, KA, concert has a rare Benny the Bouncer live version. To me the 30/11/1977 New Haven concert was totally new. I knew the Wheeling, Long Island and Long Beach recordings of the same period, but this one is probably the best overview of an entire '77 "trio only" concert. For some strange reason I felt the band was not making the proper "click" with the audience during this New Haven show. So what you hear is three dynamic artists working as hard as they can to get into "touch" with their public. It is one of the greatest ELP shows - with an alienating atmosphere. Their skill and speed are amazing. ELP had reached its "prime" during the 1974 shows. This New Haven show proves that ELP were determined and did everything within their ability to stay top of the bill. It is amazing that ELP managed to do performances like this year round on an almost daily basis during their long 1997/1978 American tour. I listened to this record, but I could hardly believe what I heard..."
For FANS, this is it!

"Sure, the sound quality could be better, but one should consider the rarity/quality of the performance in order to easily justify the purchase. For the dollar, there are hours of great music that chronicle the live evolution/degradation of ELP works.
While Vol. I covers a span of time just short of a year, this box is more broad, covering the period late 1972- late 1977. This allows for a broad range of arrangements, but omits 1973 as they were working out BSS.
This is all my opinion, but, I found the performances to be interesting enough that the sound quality was not that bad, actually sounds "warmer", at times, to me than their 1990's performances where the recordings are crisper. I was only let down by the 1977 New Haven show, where the recording is compressed too greatly. I hope that they release other shows from this tour as better tapes exist.
The Rich Stadium show is the performance highlight to me. It seems that Emerson was showboating for Bob Moog in Pictures, as Moog's headquarters was in Buffalo at the time. Emerson pushes the instrument here, while later in the 1990's (where one can find better recordings) digital stuff became easier to use in the live context.
It is super to finally support the band by purchasing performances that I have enjoyed for years in other formats!"
