CD Reviews

A nice collection, but too pricey

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Not to be confused with "The Essential Elvis Presley" release - they both use the same cover photo, this is a nice 2 CD collection of Elvis songs that were popular in Holland. It includes his well known classic international hits like Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, Don't Be Cruel, Suspicious Minds and Burning Love but also includes songs that were not hits in the US like Suspicion, Wooden Heart, I Just Can't Help Believin', and Always On My Mind. This collection includes the infamous laughing version of "Are You Lonesome Tonight." This was a live recording where Elvis changed a line of the song to make a joke, which he had been known to do from time-to-time ever since he started performing. But he became so tickled this time that he could not stop laughing. The last half of the song is mostly just Elvis laughing. What makes this recording remarkable is that it was actually released as a single in Europe after his death, and became a hit (which is why it is included here).

While this is a nice collection, there are ones just as good available domestically at a much cheaper price. If you are looking for a 2 CD overview of Elvis songs, you could get the "Elvis 30 #1 Hits" and his excellent follow-up "2nd to None" CDs both for cheaper than the price of this import - plus you would get 61 songs instead of just 50; or you could get the 3 CD "HitStory" release with 80 songs for less money than this release."
