CD Reviews

A good Tomato compilation

"There is plenty of great music here, smouldering electric blues powered by Elmore James' huge voice and fiery slide guitar playing. And songs like "Dust My Broom", "The Sky Is Crying", "Person To Person", and the great Chess single "Talk To Me Baby (I Can't Hold Out)" are among the best and toughest electric blues you'll ever hear.Fifteen songs is a bit on the skimpy side, however...a CD's running time could have easily allowed for ten more songs, and the track list is perhaps not quite as strong as on Rhino's "The Sky Is Crying", which still stands as the best single-disc overview of Elmore's too-brief recording career.
But if you've got something against Rhino Records, this one is not a bad bet at all."

"The first Elmore James I bought and heard was a Bell-label vinyl cut-out. Of the various Elmore James CDs I've since bought -- including the multi-CD Capricorn box -- this is the one that has those recordings -- and they leave the others in the dust.

Why? Because in these the singing is deeply emotional and passionate. And that guitar work . . . !

There may be CDs with more tracks; but if they haven't the passion of these, they don't cut it. (Er -- the Elmore James CD "Let's Cut It" is good -- but still not up to this one.)
