In commemorating the 150th anniversary of the death of Edvard Grieg, the BIS Records label has issued a series of fine recordings that shines a spotlight on this fine composer. This disc focuses on some of Grieg's best-known music that helped to define his special genius as a composer.
Fra Holberg's Tid (From Holberg's Time) starts off the recording, and this disc is a charming collection of idyllic chamber music for strings and small orchestra. Enhancing Grieg's reputation as a Norwegian Victorian, these pieces again show why his music was so entrancing to a performer like the pianist Percy Grainger, who championed Grieg's music all over the world.
This recording was made especially for Grieg's anniversary celebration and BIS is to be commended for its devotion to maintaining and restoring the reputation of overlooked composers. The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Ole Kristian Ruud, shines here in multi-channel and standard stereo sound.
