Pascha? no, Georgius Zrunek!!!
Patrick H. Maxfield | Boston MA USA | 06/27/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"A friend gave me his copy of this performance of the Christmas Mass (with only 5 of the carols from Prosae Pastorales) on the Gramofonove Zavody label for purposes of identifying the strange sounding instruments he didn't recognize. Both of these performances of the Mass were originally released on LP back in 1973. There have been some advances in musicology and although the manuscript source for the Mass is Pascha's "Harmonia pastoralis" (Edmund Pascha 1714-1772) the work is actually by Father Georgius Zrunek (1736-1789), a Franciscan. The various folk instruments used in conjunction with the regular symphony orchestra strings, organ, etc. are delightful. Fujara (Slovak "overtone" flute); serpent; cimbalom, etc. make this a feast for the ears."
