It's all about Dorati...

(4 out of 5 stars)

"This 1974 remastered reissue features Antal Dorati conducting

music he is best associated with. Though this recording may lack the last degree of refinement, overall he gives us a full blooded vibrant performance. The recording may be a little rough, perhaps more apt to Strauss waltzes but the sound is far more than acceptable. Both full sets of dances are included here. Unlike Brahm's "Hungarian Dances" which were based on actual folk melodies. Dvorak didn't use a single bar of folk music. He created his own themes in the style of folk music. He also made each "Slavonic Dance" a compact rhapsody able to stand on it's own, in varied moods. This is why we see so many excerpts used as filler coupled with other Dvorak works. Of course the piano versions are still available for the purists. However, Dvorak's crafted orchestrations and Dorati's enthusiastic reading makes this my favorite.
