If the exciting recording of the Dvorák Piano Quintet by Menahem Pressler and the Emerson Quartet is too hard-driven for you, here's the perfect alternative. Peter Frankl, a wonderful pianist who has been underexposed on records recently, collaborates with the Lindsay Quartet on a performance that is more expansive than the Pressler/Emerson version. Yet Frankl and the Lindsays never sound lax, just relaxed, although the Lindsays' tone isn't as beautiful as some we've heard. The Martin is somewhat better organized than most of that composer's work, a thoroughly attractive work in an early 20th century (1944) style. Another fine performance, on a disc with excellent sound quality. --Leslie Gerber
