Synopsis

Album Description
Digipak. As the original liner notes for the Indigos album clearly states, the Ellington orchestra not only performed in concert halls -presenting extended suites to be listened to from the comfort of a plush theatre seat - it was also a legendary dance band, accustomed to playing very personal versions of the most celebrated standards as well as the numerous compositions by its leader. It must be said, however, that the prolific Ellington book well outnumbered the renditions of tunes from Tin-Pan-Alley. Therefore, Duke and his long-time partner Billy Strayhorn's treatment of well known songs like "Willow Weep for Me", "Tenderly" and "Dancing in the Dark", always makes for an exciting listening experience. This edition put together for the first time ever all the material from the Indigos sessions, including two tunes omitted from the album and all of the alternate takes. 19 tracks. Jazzbeat.

CD Reviews

Finally done right!
C. Daley | Claremont, CA USA | 01/07/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Over 10 years ago I posted a review for the original Sony/Columbia CD of Duke Ellington's Indigos. I complained about the quality of the transfer while lamenting that such fantastic music wasn't available on CD. Late in 2009 I saw this CD listed. Not much description so I was wary- did they revisit the tapes or was it just a re-packaged version of the Sony/Columbia CD? I finally decided to take a chance and boy am I glad I did!

This is what the first CD should have sounded like. Is it as good as the original LP? Not sure only because I haven't stopped to make the comparison. But the wonderful tone of the instruments comes through. Since most folks don't spin vinyl anymore I'd have to say this is the definitive version of Indigos for most people.

They also did what I asked for 10+ years ago and added all the tracks from both versions of the album plus a couple of others. You get over an hour of glorious Ellington. Yes, it isn't cheap compared to the ancient Sony/Columbia version but it is worth every penny.

This is the version to buy!!!"
Beautiful music

"Apparently there was some criticism of this disc because it wasn't considered 'jazz' by some purists but dance music. Whatever, it is still beautiful music played by the best musicians of the jazz world. It is sweet and sensitive and yet the power of the big Basie band is so obvious. I love it!"
