CD Reviews

Gritty, No-Frills R&B

(4 out of 5 stars)

"For some reason, I expected a flood of product being released after the death of Dr. Feelgood vocalist Lee Brilleaux, but unfortunately it just hasn't happened. I guess quality is better than quantity though and "BBC Sessions 1973-1978" is a keeper. Thirteen of the 21 tracks feature guitarist/headcase/show-off Wilko Johnson, an absolute genius and the real "Master Of The Telecaster" (with all apologies to Albert Collins), casting off a barrage of chunky, greasy, and downright dirty chords, riffs, and leads, all apparently without the use of a pick. The remainder feature Johnson's replacement, John "Gypie" Mayo, who seamlessly stepped in without a hitch and surprised everyone who thought Johnson's departure meant the end of the band. Although usually branded "pub rock," Dr. Feelgood were essentially a down and dirty R&B outfit, comprised of the aforementioned Brilleaux, Johnson/Mayo, and an ace rhythm section of John B. Sparkes on bass and ominously monikered The Big Figure on drums. If "Malpractice" is still in print, it's the perfect introduction to the band and one of the great lost albums of the '70's, but "BBC Sessions 1973-1978" is a great companion piece. Recommended..."
